People tend to pick varnish, over any other wood paints, to give an elegant look to their wood furniture. Besides aesthetic looks to furniture and doors, varnish finds applications in quite a few other areas too. There are two basic varnish types known as spirit and oleo-resinous. The most important spirit varnish is a solution of shellac in alcohol. These form early varnishes are based on resins from n at u r a l sources. Currently, varnishes are produced from synthetic resins too.Properties
Varnish is resin dissolved in turpentine along with a drying oil such as linseed oil. There are several resins available with which the varnish can be made, and the selection of a resin depends on the application.
Varnish has little or no colour, and is transparent. When applied, it forms a hard protective layer of film on the surface. This surface finishing product is extensively used on wooden surfaces from doors to furniture.
Varnish finishes are usually glossy but may be designed to produce semigloss sheens by the addition of certain chemicals called flatting agents.
